Samsui Women by Special Artist Shoban Pillai.

Known for their iconic blue or black samfoo set paired with the iconic red headdress, Samsui Women, or hong tou jin, are female Chinese immigrants who came to Singapore from the late 1920s to 1940s. Many of these women came to Singapore in their youth and worked as general labourers on the island’s many construction sites – carrying heavy building materials, digging soil, and doing back-breaking work. The Samsui Women’s bright red headdresses allowed them to be visible while working at dangerous construction sites. Today, these hardworking Samsui Women have become one of Singapore’s historical icons and are honoured in many ways for their contributions towards Singapore’s infrastructure.
